Many of our mantel sales are for false fireplaces. Any mantel can be used, either and antique or on from our reproduction line. For an authentic look, we suggest using one of our antique cast iron Summer Covers that were originally used on coal burning fireplaces. Summer Covers were installed on the fireplace opening with brick, tile, or marble showing between the Summer Cover and mantel opening. New for 2005 we distribute an Electric "Four Seasons Firebox". Unlike conventional masonry or gas fireboxes, this electric version can be operated with or without heat. Allowing you to enjoy the realistic flame effect year round!

For a false fireplace use a piece of plywood cut slightly larger than the mantel opening. Face the plywood with false brick wall board, paver brick, ceramic or marble tile. The Summer Cover is attached to the plywood after it has been faced with the material or your choice. The whole piece is then screwed to the back side of the mantel opening. When the mantel is placed against the wall, it looks like a complete mantel with fireplace surround and opening.

We always have several Summer Covers in stock. Some have been sand blasted and repainted. Others simply need stripping or cleaning with a wire brush and repainted. Summer Covers range in price from $100 to $500. An example of a false fireplace is shown below.

Mantels for working or false fireplaces are easy to install. It just takes a few minutes and about 50 cents worth of hardware. We give written instructions. Mantels can be removed and taken to a new location like any other piece of furniture.
